Becoming an ARC Boatman or Boatwoman
At Alaska Rivers Company we like to consider our employees as Boatman and Boatwoman. This means we expect our staff to know the code of our river, proper safety conduct and etiquette on all vessels and to treat each other with respect. It also means that we don’t use the term “that’s not my job”. Please note that all employees will be expected to help out all positions at sometime throughout the season. This allows us to work with flexible work/days off schedule, which benefits everyone who works at ARC!

Scenic Rafting / Hiking Guide
This position is a very fun and exciting job that keeps you always on the move. This job is good for experienced boatmen and women and for new greenhorns as well. This is a perfect position for people looking for a job for summer break from college, or for someone wanting to get into the guiding and learn the ropes. In this position you will learn a lot of valuable skills and assets that are key to our operations success. In this position you will gain valuable knowledge that will allow you to become qualified to run our other tours in the future. We are very team oriented and you will be expected to help everyone out wherever you can.
- At least 18 years of age or older required by Alaska State Parks
- Obtain a valid Basic 1st Aid / CPR Certification
- A current driver’s license or picture ID
- The ability to multi task

Scenic Guide / Fishing Apprentice
This is the same position as the scenic guide but is catered to individuals who are looking to acquire the skills and knowledge to become a fishing boatman or woman. You will be assisting in all aspects of the fishing operation. The only way to learn is to do it, and this fun and exciting job sets you up to become a future fishing guide.

House Keeper/ Shuttle Driver/ Guide
This is a perfect job for those interested in training to be a guide and or someone who wants to be part of our team by taking care of the very important tasks that are the backbone of our operation. From housekeeping to gardening to working in our kitchen, to running shuttles, gearing up guests, to answering phones this job keeps you on the move.
If Guiding then:
- At least 18 years of age or older required by Alaska State Parks
- Obtain a valid Basic 1st AidCPR Certification
- A current driver’s license or picture ID
- Clean Driving Record
Maintenance Man or Woman / Guide
Similar to the Scenic / Hiking guide, but this is a job for someone who doesn’t mind getting dirty and greasy. In charge of maintaining all of our rolling stock. From 15 passenger vans to 1 ton trucks, to many different models of trailers. Also in charge of carpentry projects, plumbing or electrical fixes, and cabin maintenance. Must have basic mechanical and engine knowledge, basic hand tool operation, and basic small engine experience. This is a very important role in our operation.

Canyon Rafting Guide
With this position you will be focusing on the Kenai River Canyon, a class II to lower class III (at high flows) section of the Upper Kenai. The canyon is the most remote section of the entire Kenai River getting completely away from the highway into the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The canyon run dumps into a huge glacial lake named Skilak where you will either be operating a motor boat across the lake or leading a 1.8 mile hike up the Hidden Creek trail. A canyon guide will be operating our 17ft. Achilles V-hull inflatable rafts with 50HP outboard along with 16-18ft. oval rafts. Basic engine and mechanical knowledge required. We are very team oriented and you will be expected to help everyone out wherever you can.

- Obtain a valid up to date Basic 1st Aid/ CPR Certification
- A current driver’s license or picture ID and clean driving record
- A valid US Coast Guard Commercial 6 passenger license required of all motorboat operators. Non-motorized operators are not required to obtain a 6 passenger license.
- US Coast Guard Licensing 907-271-6736
- Kenai River Guides who hold and are operating with a Coast Guard license are required to provide proof of their enrollment in a random drug testing program approved by the US Coast Guard. We can provide a program for you when hired.
- *A current TWIC card – Guides who posses and are actively using their US Coast Guard 6 passenger license must obtain a TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential). For more information please visit tsa.gov or call 866-347-8942.
- Wilderness skills
- Understanding of outboard operation
- Basic mechanical knowledge with a focus on trailer maintenance and repair

Fishing Boatmen and Boatwomen
We are permitted for the entire length of the Upper Kenai River, and run Middle Kenai River trips for our lodge package guests. We operate in 18-20 ft. aluminum drift boats. The standard guide boat for the Kenai is four to five fishermen per guide. The Upper Kenai is drift only waters and is an anglers paradise and the Middle River is home to some massive fish. You will be expected to be versed in bank and boat techniques for fly fishing and spin fishing for rainbow trout/char and Sockeye, Silver, and Pink salmon. You will need a Coast Guard License to guide the Kenai Canyon and the Middle Kenai River. We have both new guide and professional guide positions available. We run a very team focused operation and expect our fishing boatmen and women to help out in any capacity that they are needed. *see scenic guide/ fishing apprentice for those interested in learning the ropes*

- We can provide fishing rods and reels for first year guides, by your second year you will expected to have your own.
- Obtain an Alaska State Parks Commercial Use Permit by attending the Kenai River Guide class offered by Alaska State Parks. For more information please visit www.krga.org (Contact ARC for more information and assistance on registering)
- A valid US Coast Guard Commercial 6 passenger license required of all motorboat operators. Non-motorized operators are not required to obtain a 6 passenger license. US Coast Guard Licensing 907-271-6736. Acquiring this license takes many months, so do not delay in contacting them!
- Kenai River Guides who hold and are operating with a Coast Guard license are required to provide proof of their enrollment in a random drug testing program approved by the US Coast Guard. We will provide an approved program once hired

- Current Kenai River fishing guides must successfully complete the Kenai River Guide Academy training course approved by Alaska State Parks. For more information please visit www.krga.org
- Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening required for Kenai River fishing guides.
- Obtain a valid Alaska Sport Fishing license required for Kenai River fishing guides. License can be purchased on-line at alaska.gov
- Kenai River fishing guides must obtain an Alaska Department of Fish & Game guide license for the current year. License can be purchased on-line at:www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/statewide/Guides/guides/cfm.
- Kenai River fishing guides may not have been convicted of a felony with in the past 5 years and may not have been convicted of more than 1 misdemeanor violation of provision 5 (Fish & Game regulation) with in the past 5 years
